Each calendar year Easter changes its date, calculated according to the lunar calendar, but is always in the period from April 4th to May 8th. The Christian holiday celebrated on this day marks Christ's resurrection and his triumph over death. The holiday is preceded by a week, called "passionate Sunday." In the days of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, when different rituals are performed and a number of prohibitions during the great Lent are observed. According to the old traditions on Wednesday the women didn't work - they avoided knitting, sewing, weaving. On Holy Thursday, called Maundy Thursday as well, they started painting the eggs. Eggs for painting were collected from Monday on, but the best eggs were considered those laid in the very Thursday. Women Prepared a large number of eggs, because in addition to decorating their home with them, they wanted to give them to the children, and anyone who enters the house, because otherwise the luck would go away from this house. The First painted egg was always red and was believed to have magical powers. The women rubbed the cheeks of the children with it so that they are healthy and rosy throughout the whole year. In some areas of the country it was kept till next Thursday or next year. There was also a custom to bury this egg in the fields as a tribute to St. George, to keep the crop from hail. The Red paint was prepared from oregano, gathered in Midsummer and dried well after that. The Eggs were washed with water, which contained ash and boiled in water with cabbage juice. The painting ritual was performed by the oldest woman in the house, and the additional decoration was done by the girls, using geometric or plant patterns. On Maundy Thursday and the following six Ascension Thursdays women were forbidden to wash, weave,or sew. Special ritual bread was made on the next day - Holy Friday. Easter ritual breads were several types and they were designed for the festive family table, for godparents and relatives. Shapes were round, oblong or pieces of dough tangled into each other as a plait. They were prepared with fat and smeared with egg yolk, they were and still are the essential food for that day. On the bread before baking people put an egg or a few eggs, in different regions of the countries it can be painted or not. Usually on Saturday women used to go to the cemetery, where they brought eggs and bread to the dead. Women prepared such Easter Bread for the best man as well, they brought it to his home along with some painted eggs on the day of the holiday - Holy Sunday. The newlyweds were also given eggs.
